Cognitive disorders

Cognitive disorders are mental conditions that impair the cognitive functioning of a person. A patient may experience extreme challenges in their short term memory, with solving problems, making decisions and communicating with others.

Common cognitive disorders include Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and delirium.

Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s is a progressive disorder where the brain cells degenerate and die prematurely. Alzheimer’s is the most common disorder that causes dementia. Early signs of Alzheimer’s include forgetting recent events or conversations. The disorder is progressive. A patient will eventually develop severe memory deterioration and lose their ability to live independently.

Delirium

Delirium is a mental condition that develops acutely. Delirium occurs over a short period of time and also involves a loss of awareness of one’s surroundings, situation and ability to think clearly. The condition can also make it difficult to sleep. One can experience delirium as a result of a medical condition or in association with a substance such as alcohol or prescribed drugs like steroids.

Dementia

Dementia is a mental illness that affects memory, thinking and social abilities enough to interfere with one’s daily life. Even though dementia is generally associated with memory loss, it’s not always the case as having memory loss alone doesn’t mean one has dementia. Dementia is progressive and also includes problems concentrating and loss of other thinking capabilities. There are many causes of dementia, including stroke, substance abuse, head injuries and metabolic disorders. It is important to exclude reversible causes of dementia.

Cognitive  tests are available online, but they can only give you a general idea with regards to the symptoms that you are experiencing. A full examination is needed for an official diagnosis; therefore, one should consult a doctor before starting any treatment plan.
